What is Semi Permanent Makeup

What Is Semi Permanent Makeup?

Semi-permanent make-up is all about enhancing your eyebrows and lips to add definition to your face without the need to apply your own makeup and constant having to touch up your makeup throughout the day;  making your life hassle free!

A coloured pigment is injected through a very fine vibrating needle with a machine into the upper most layers of the skin.

Semi permanent makeup is becoming quite a beauty trend and becoming increasingly popular in these times. People from celebrities to ordinary folk are taking advantage of the Semi Permanent Makeup services on offer today, essentially making life easier and making your look so much better.

So what exactly is semi permanent makeup? There is a lot of confusion about what it is and who it is meant for and this article is designed to take away some of that mystery.

There are several names it has been branded as and you may have heard of all of these and it can be confusing –  the terms are; permanent makeup, semi permanent makeup, tattooing, and micropigmentation, microblading and nano blading.

These are all terms for essentially the same thing, which is implementing a coloured pigment into what we call the papillary layer of the dermis of the skin to give a semi permanent and natural beauty look.

The question is often asked; “how long does semi permanent makeup last for?” The simple answer is approximately 1 to 3 years depending on the procedure that is performed.

How Long Does Semi Permanent Makeup Last?

This is a question that gets asked all the time and the answer to this comes down to which procedure you have had done.

The general answer is that it can last from 1 to 3 years with semi permanent eyeliner;  approximately a year for eyebrows and lastly lip blushing lasting possibly  up to 3 years.

The pigments themselves are essentially iron oxides and as they are injected fairly shallow into the skin, results will eventually fade. Some of the pigment is broken down naturally by our own bodies and also skin renews itself all the time so older cells die off and as they do, they are replaced with new cells over time.

This is not a bad thing as over time, our tastes change and our facial features change with age so as the semi permanent makeup fades, this allows us to choose other options that may suit us better at that time.

What Semi Permanent Technique is Best?

There are various techniques depending on what result you are looking for. To give an example, eyelash enhancement is quite new and a series of small dots of black pigment are injected in between the normal eyelash and just below their roots, on the upper waterline and this gives the look of fuller and thicker eyelashes.

Eyebrow enhancement is different again; pigmented lines are injected that resemble and match the natural eyebrow hairs as closely as possible. This semi permanent makeup look is achieved by drawing numerous individual strokes between the hairs, with the use of a microneedle. This can be achieved manually (microblading) or with a machine (nano blading) and which one is chosen will depend on your required look and your skin type.

For example, oily skin will not suit microblading and that is a situation where nano blading with a machine will be used instead as this can be used on oily skin with great results.

Also there is something called powder brows; this is an eyebrow procedure that uses a dotting effect to enhance the shading of the eyebrows.

Throughout the procedure, anaesthetics gels can be used to numb any pain while the needles are being used for injecting the pigment throughout the semi permanent makeup procedure.

Is There Any Aftercare Needed?

With the injecting procedure, like with any slight skin trauma, you need several days to heal. Like with any semi permanent makeup procedure, you need to keep the area as clean and dry as you possibly can and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible as this can increase the risk of the pigment fading.

Typically speaking, most people are healed within 7-10 days.

Can You Remove Semi Permanent Makeup?

The simple answer is Yes! If for some reason, you don’t like the look or you want to change your look sooner rather than later, a saline removal procedure is safe and highly effective. It involves injecting a special saline solution into the treated area and this solution pulls out the pigment molecules from within the skin and results in fading of the semi permanent makeup look.

We all know that the pigments will fade over time but it is reassuring to know that that there is a solution to remove it if you really want to.

Never attempt to remove it on your own though; always seek the help of trained experts in the semi permanent makeup field.
